Frozen Lakes of Trentino: where to take WOW photos

10.02.2026

There is a very specific moment during a Trentino winter when lakes freeze over, the landscape becomes minimal, and colors narrow down to white, blue, and gold. That’s when the real “wow” photos are born—the ones that look fake, but are completely real. If you’re staying in Trento, in less than an hour you can reach lakes that, in winter, turn into almost Nordic-looking scenery, perfect for a slow walk, a deep breath… and an unforgettable shot.

We’ve selected our favorites.

Lake Serraia (Baselga di Piné)

In winter, Lake Serraia becomes incredibly photogenic. The houses of Baselga di Piné overlook the water and, when the lake is frozen or lightly snow-covered, they seem to float in an almost Nordic reflection. For the perfect photo, we recommend going early in the morning, when the light is low and the lake is still. If there’s a light frost on the surface, the contrast between the pale ice, blue sky, and colorful façades creates a striking graphic effect.
The walk around the lake is flat and easy—perfect even for a short stroll.

Lake Lavarone

Lake Lavarone feels more intimate, surrounded by forests that fill with snow in winter. The atmosphere is quiet, almost muffled. When the lake freezes, the surface becomes a large opaque sheet reflecting dark trees and a pale sky. It’s not a classic “postcard” lake—it’s more cinematic, ideal for moody, evocative shots.
The best photos are taken along the edge, where the forest almost reaches the water. If the trees are snow-covered, the result is a natural frame around a bright white center.

Lake Smeraldo (Val di Non)

In winter, Lake Smeraldo in Fondo, together with the Rio Sass canyon and rocky walls, creates a strong contrast between ice, rock, and forest.
When the water is partially frozen, slabs, cracks, and natural patterns form—almost abstract shapes. It’s one of the most interesting lakes for those who love details, not just wide panoramas.
We suggest shooting in the late afternoon, when the light turns warmer and the surrounding rocks take on golden tones, while the lake remains cold and bluish.

Lamar Lakes

The Lamar Lakes, above the Valle dei Laghi, feel almost Nordic in winter, immersed in the forest and far from towns.
When frozen and covered in snow, the boundary between land and lake nearly disappears. What remains is a pale expanse, broken only by dark trees and mountains in the background.
These lakes are perfect for minimalist photography. Look for simple lines: a dark trunk, a trail in the snow, a branch in the foreground with the white lake behind. Guaranteed “Scandinavian” vibes.

Lagolo (Monte Bondone)

The small Lake Lagolo on Monte Bondone feels like something out of a winter fairy tale. Intimate and surrounded by dense forest, when it freezes it becomes a hidden white gem among the trees.
Here you won’t find wide-open panoramas—you’ll find atmosphere. Steam rising on very cold days, snow-laden branches, and absolute silence. After a snowfall, every corner becomes a natural frame. It’s the perfect place for close-ups, details, footsteps in the snow, and stolen moments. After an afternoon among ice, light, and suspended landscapes, returning to Trento means coming back to a city that stays lively even in winter. Staying at Hotel Be Place lets you easily combine nature and relaxation: frozen lakes in the morning, back to the hotel in the evening, with a panoramic view to close the day.
