Just over twenty minutes from Trento lies a city that never fails to surprise its visitors: Rovereto. Elegant, creative, and vibrant. A place where history and modernity coexist naturally, among Renaissance palaces, cutting-edge museums, and beautifully designed cafés and bars.
If you are looking for a different idea for an afternoon trip, Rovereto is the perfect destination. The city can easily be explored on foot. It offers cultural experiences of the highest level and has that lively atmosphere that invites you to slow down and enjoy a relaxed aperitif.
At the heart of it all is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART), one of Italy’s most important museums dedicated to 20th-century and contemporary art.
Even before entering, MART impresses visitors with its architecture. The museum opens onto a large circular square covered by a spectacular glass and steel dome designed by architect Mario Botta together with engineer Giulio Andreolli.
The square is a bright and theatrical space, designed to host visitors, events, and installations. Spending a few minutes here before entering the museum is almost a ritual. Watch how the light changes throughout the day, creating ever-changing reflections on the structure.
Inside, the museum houses one of the most important collections dedicated to Italian art of the 20th century. Among the works you will encounter key artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Fortunato Depero, Carlo Carrà, and Giorgio Morandi.
The visit is enjoyable even for those who are not art experts. The spaces and temporary exhibitions make every visit different from the previous one.
Rovereto has a special connection with the Futurist movement thanks to Fortunato Depero, one of the most original artists of the 20th century. If you have a little extra time, you can add a stop at the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero, a branch of the MART entirely dedicated to Depero’s work.
Here art becomes graphics, advertising, design, and stage design. Bright colours, geometric shapes, and surprising projects tell the story of an artist who anticipated many contemporary visual languages.
Don’t miss this visit — compared to the main museum, it is certainly more playful.
After the museum, it’s worth getting pleasantly lost in the streets of the historic centre. Rovereto is an elegant city, with noble palaces, small squares, and arcades that invite you to stroll without haste. The heart of the city is Piazza Rosmini, dedicated to the philosopher Antonio Rosmini. From here, streets filled with shops, cafés, and bars branch out — perfect places to stop for a coffee or an aperitif. In just a few minutes you can also reach Corso Bettini, one of the most elegant avenues in Trentino, where you will find the MART and several historic buildings.
After art comes the most relaxed moment of the afternoon: the aperitif.
In Rovereto you will find modern venues that pay great attention to interior design and the quality of their offerings. Creative cocktails, carefully selected wines from Trentino, and small dishes perfect for sharing are common. Sitting at an outdoor table — especially on a spring day — is the best way to end the afternoon. A glass of Teroldego or another local wine, a few snacks, and the feeling of having discovered a creative city full of personality.
Rovereto is a perfect destination for anyone staying in Trento who wants to experience something different. The distance from our hotel is minimal, and an afternoon is often enough to fall in love with the city — and decide to come back again.
