By late October, Trentino’s castles already have everything you need to get into the Halloween spirit. Towers, stone walls, courtyards, narrow passageways and mysterious stories that seem made to be told as the days grow shorter. Add workshops, ghosts to hunt for and theatrical tours, and your weekend plans practically make themselves.
If you’re staying in Trento around Halloween, it’s the perfect opportunity to venture beyond the city and discover some of the region’s castles in a completely different light.
Here are the events worth adding to your calendar.
Let’s start with one of the most eagerly awaited events: “Una visita da brivido – Halloween al Castello di Avio”, taking place on 24, 25 and 31 October 2026.
Even on an ordinary day, Avio Castle has more than enough atmosphere for anyone who loves evocative, historic settings. Perched above Sabbionara, with its crenellated walls and towers overlooking the Vallagarina valley, it becomes the perfect setting for Halloween as October draws to a close.
Over the three days, families can take part in special theatrical guided tours, with local theatre companies leading visitors through stories and legends connected to the ancient castle. Each tour lasts around 90 minutes, with departures at regular intervals throughout the day.
On 31 October, the experience continues until 10 pm – a good reason to wait until darkness falls before entering the castle, if you’re feeling brave enough.
Booking is required, so it’s worth planning ahead.
Here, the mission couldn’t be clearer: find the ghosts.
For Halloween, Rovereto Castle, home to the Italian War History Museum, hosts a special ghost hunt designed for families with children.
Little white ghosts are hiding almost everywhere: among the towers, in the passageways, around the courtyards and even near the well. Children are challenged to find them one by one as they explore the castle.
The activity lasts around 75 minutes and is suitable for children aged 4 to 10.
It’s one of those experiences that combines fun with discovery. While searching for ghosts, families also get the chance to explore some of the most fascinating corners of a fortress standing right in the heart of Rovereto.
And once the ghost hunt is over, you can make the most of the day with a stroll through Rovereto’s historic centre before heading back to Trento.
On 31 October, there’s another destination that seems almost made for Halloween night.
Castel San Giovanni stands in the village of Bondone, a fortress built on a rocky outcrop with panoramic views over Lake Idro.
On Halloween afternoon, the castle hosts a family-friendly event featuring enchanting storytelling, creative workshops and a science show, combining mysterious tales with plenty of fascinating discoveries.
It’s worth arriving a little early to enjoy the surroundings too. Bondone is officially recognised as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, and thanks to its secluded, panoramic position, the castle is well worth visiting even before the spookier part of the day begins.
Halloween can also be the perfect excuse to discover Trentino during one of the most beautiful times of the year.
By late October, the forests have changed colour, cooler temperatures invite you to slow down, and a day spent exploring villages and castles fits perfectly into a weekend in Trento.
There’s no need to pack your itinerary with activities either. Spend one day exploring the city, wander through its historic centre, stop for an aperitivo and leave a few hours the following day for a trip into the surrounding countryside.
Staying at Hotel Be Place gives you the freedom to enjoy Trento at your own pace while using the city as a base for discovering the castles, villages and landscapes nearby.
Halloween is just one reason to visit. October brings autumn colours, crisp days and a slower rhythm that makes even a last-minute decision about where to go feel like part of the experience.
Book your stay and treat yourself to a few autumn days in Trentino.
