The days grow shorter, the morning air turns crisper and the forests begin to change colour.<\/p>\n

Real autumn has arrived: yellow and red leaves, trails crunching beneath your hiking boots, chestnuts and that softer light that makes everything look effortlessly photogenic.<\/p>\n

Between September and October, autumn foliage transforms many parts of Trentino, and you only need to travel a short distance from the city to find beautiful walks where you can make the most of the season. Some are short and easy, while others take a few hours. Here are a few ideas to get you started.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Sardagna and the Chestnut Trail: Autumn Just Above Trento<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

You do not have to travel far to find your first chestnut trees. Sardagna, on the eastern slopes of Monte Bondone, overlooks Trento and offers a particularly lovely combination of woodland, chestnut groves and views across the Adige Valley.<\/p>\n

The Chestnut Trail starts here, following a circular route through chestnut groves, meadows, woodland and ancient terraced landscapes. Some of the chestnut trees in the area are centuries old, growing alongside hazel trees, hornbeams, beeches and maples.<\/p>\n

It is a great choice if you want to spend a few hours surrounded by nature without planning a full day in the mountains. There is also a shorter route through the village of Sardagna, offering the chance to explore its historic centre.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Lake Cei: Autumn Colours Reflected on the Water<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

If you are looking for picture-perfect autumn scenery, Lake Cei is definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Surrounded by woodland and protected as a Special Area of Conservation, the lake takes on a completely different atmosphere in autumn. The beech forests turn warm shades of gold and red, the light becomes softer and more golden, and the lake reflects it all: trees, sky and every autumn hue in between.<\/p>\n

Walking around the lake is ideal for anyone looking for something peaceful and undemanding, while those who want to continue can head towards Malga Cimana, following a route through woodland dotted with large beech trees, meadows and larches.<\/p>\n

Our advice? Do not rush. Lake Cei is one of those places where sitting by the water for a while is every bit as much a part of the experience as the walk itself.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Roncegno Terme: A Walk Through the Chestnut Groves of Valsugana<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

If you want to turn your search for chestnuts into a small day trip, head towards Valsugana. Around Roncegno Terme, chestnut trees are an important feature of the landscape and line several walking routes through the hills surrounding the village.<\/p>\n

One of the most interesting walks leads to the small Church of Santa Brigida. The route is just over 3 kilometres long and passes through an area of traditional farmhouses and large chestnut trees. It is an easy walk and works well for a family day out too.<\/p>\n

Roncegno is also part of the Valsugana Chestnut Route, a network of trails connecting villages, forests and chestnut groves. You can simply choose a route depending on how much time you have and how far you feel like walking.<\/p>\n

After all, autumn foliage is wonderful, but nobody is likely to complain if you happen to spot a few chestnuts along the way too.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Torcegno: Ancient Chestnut Trees and a Slower Pace<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Also located along the Chestnut Route is Torcegno, a small Valsugana village surrounded by chestnut groves.<\/p>\n

Here, you can follow a route of around 4 kilometres through the countryside surrounding the village, passing the small Church of Maria Ausiliatrice before reaching the Campestrini area, home to an impressive centuries-old chestnut tree.<\/p>\n

It is a walk that perfectly captures the more rural side of autumn in Trentino: traditional farmhouses, meadows, forests and trees that have been part of the landscape for generations. It is an especially pleasant destination if you would like to combine a walk with discovering some of Valsugana’s smaller villages.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Monte Bondone: Where Autumn Climbs Higher<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

And then there is Monte Bondone, Trento’s own mountain. Here, autumn unfolds almost in layers: from the chestnut groves at lower elevations to beech forests, conifer woods and the open landscapes higher up.<\/p>\n

The area offers countless options, ranging from gentle walks to proper mountain hikes. The Viote basin, at around 1,500 metres above sea level, is one of the main starting points for anyone wanting to spend a few hours immersed in nature and surrounded by Alpine scenery.<\/p>\n

It is worth remembering that autumn conditions can change quickly with altitude. A mild day in the centre of Trento can feel considerably cooler up on Monte Bondone. Dressing in layers, for once, is not just something your grandmother would tell you to do.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Before You Set Off: A Few Simple Tips<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Autumn is a wonderful season for walking, but it does require a little extra preparation. Daylight hours become shorter, trails can be damp and temperatures can vary considerably between the valley floor and the mountains.<\/p>\n

It is therefore always a good idea to check the weather forecast and trail conditions before setting off, wear suitable footwear and take an extra warm layer with you, even when the sun is shining in Trento.<\/p>\n

And what about chestnuts? Picking them may seem like the most natural thing in the world, but forests and chestnut groves may be located on private land or subject to specific local regulations. Always check the signs and information provided locally and, where necessary, simply enjoy looking at them instead.<\/p>\n

<\/a> You Do Not Have to Go Far<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n
